This work forms part of a series of historical atlases of types of land use in Europe. This volume specifically concerns zones where the exploitation of mineral resources has been historically important. The files contained in this folder provide a sample of the current state of research in this field in 10 zones situated in six European countries, and of some programmes for protecting this part of the cultural heritage. Two technical files complete the work. The purpose is both to present some well known and lesser-known examples of mining sectors, and to suggest a historical reading of ancient mining activity and metallurgy. These zones are considered here as complex landscapes, which must be studied over a prolonged period, and which have produced original forms of land improvement.
