Abstract

The main focus of this project was how to operate slag splashing to achieve a more consistent internal vessel shape. At the start of the project it was generally accepted that changes in vessel shape over a campaign lead to a reduction in BOF process consistency. To improve slag splashing, slag conditioning, slag solidification and the actual process of splashing were investigated. Bath stirring was briefly investigated. The investigations showed that either the vessel shape has no influence on BOF consistency, or it must be a very complex relationship that cannot be determined directly from plant data. This challenges the assumption that improved vessel shape leads to improved process consistency.
