Abstract

Antimicrobial resistance is a rapidly growing health threat. Already resistant microbes need to be contained and efforts need to be invested to prevent new harmful strains of resistant pathogens to develop and spread. In October 2001, DG Research published an http://icadc.cordis.lu/fep-cgi/srchidadb?ACTION=D&SESSION=&RCN=200114115&CALLER=PUBL_LIB (inventory of ongoing research projects addressing various aspects of antimicrobial resistance), funded by the Quality of Life programme of the Fifth Framework Programme. As a result of positive feedback it was decided to publish this updated edition that presents a more comprehensive set of projects in this field, launched throughout the whole Fifth Framework Programme up to its closure at the end of 2002. This revised inventory covers more than 80 research projects relevant to antimicrobial resistance, most funded by the Quality of Life programme, but some by the International Cooperation and the Information Society Technologies programmes. This revised edition also includes information about seven projects, funded by DG Health and Consumer Protection, on surveillance and public perception issues related to antimicrobial resistance.
