The mission of the Institute for Health and Consumer Protection (IHCP) is to provide scientific support to the development and implementation of EU policies related to health and consumer protection. The IHCP carries out research to improve the understanding of the hazards and health risks posed by food contaminants, chemicals, biocides and biochemical systems. The present report presents highlights of the year 2002, as well as describing the work of the IHCP's various units and on-going activities. During 2002, some of the activities of the Food Products Unit were transferred to the Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements, and the GMO activities were brought under a new Biotechnology and GMO Unit. The Physical and Chemicals Exposure Unit (PCE) was created in June 2002 through a combination of existing IHCP activities and projects transferred from the Institute for Environment and Sustainability and the FPU. A major focus of activity was supporting the development of the EU Chemicals Policy.
