Abstract

The paper presents the development in design methodology of steel structures under strong earthquakes, where the ductility design plays a leader role. The factors influencing this ductility are included in design: effects of strain-rate for near-field earthquakes and accumulation of plastic rotations for far-field earthquakes, ultimate limit state due to plastic deformations or to ductile or brittle fracture.
