Abstract

An alloy of the composition Al-2 % Sc (mass %) has been prepared by levitation melting as foil 0.1 mm thick and wire of 0.5 and 1 mm diameter, and certified for scandium mass fraction by seven laboratories using three methods (neutron activation analysis, with standardisation either by the k0 method or using scandium standards, or by inductively-coupled plasma time-of-flight mass spectrometry). The certified value of scandium mass fraction is (19.95 +/- 0.20) kg{-1} (expanded uncertainty, coverage factor k = 2). The recommended minimum sample mass is 5 mg. The certified reference material is intended for thermal and epithermal reactor neutron fluency rate measurements by activation to {46} Sc, and is available as 0.1 mm foil (100 cm{2} units) or 0.5 or 1 mm diameter wire (1 m units).
