  • Crop and rangeland monitoring in Eastern Africa for early warning and food security, Proceedings of an international workshop organized by JRC FAO, Nairobi, 28-30 January 2003

The objective of the workshop was to be a "trigger" event for the constitution of a scientific network in Crop Monitoring and Yield Forecasting and Early Warning for Food Security in Eastern Africa (IGAD countries, Rwanda and Burundi).

First, the workshop was a forum where the participation presented the state of the art of the crop monitoring and yield forecasting activities at the regional level.

Second, it was a forum for a discussion and exchange of experiences on the methods and systems used and available, in particular the crop monitoring approach of the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission (EC) and of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations (UN).

Third, it undertook the initial planning for the establishment of an informal network for the improvement of data collection, use, applications and information dissemination within the region and with (inter)national partners.
