  • Modelling nitrogen pressure in the Odense River Basin, Testing a statistical model for the analysis of pressure and impacts pursuant to the Article 5 of the Water Framework Directive

Abstract

In this work a modelling tool to assess the impact of the nitrogen pressure on the surface water quality status is presented. The model can be used for the analysis of pressure pursuant to the Article 5 of the Water Framework Directive, and for the implementation of the Nitrate Directive.

In more details, the objectives of the study were to develop and use a modelling approach easilt applicable at medium and large basin scale, which allows the analysis of nitrogen pressure on water quality using readily available data. In particular the model aims to:
- identify the areas subject to higher pollution pressures, where priority actions should be undertaken;
- quantify the relative significance of different nitrogen sources (point and diffuse) in the total export;
- estimate the impact of alternative management strategies.

This work shows how a simple conceptual model can be used efficiently in the implementation of the Article 5 of WFD or the Nitrate Directive.
