Women, SMEs and research, Supporting the participation of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises in the Sixth Framework Programme

Funded under: FP6

SMEs companies employing fewer than 250 people - make up over 99% of Europes businesses, and provide two-thirds of its jobs. They are the lifeblood of the economy, and they renew their competitive strength through innovation. Competitive pressures are pushing SMEs to modernise and internationalise their way of working, and the European research programmes are a perfect tool for them to use. Successful research relies on human ingenuity. Yet much of this resource is at present being wasted - because women are not making their full contribution. Women have the right qualifications; they are just not applying for or being chosen for the research jobs.

This leaflet aims to:
Raise awareness among women and men of the problem of female under-representation in research  especially in industrial research;
Present role models of women in SMEs who have successfully conducted European research projects;
Enable and encourage more women in more SMEs to take part in the European Unions Sixth Framework Programme (FP6), especially but not exclusively through the SME specific measures such as co-operative and collective research. These measures have a budget of ?430 million, but as well as this, 15% of the entire FP6 budget for thematic priorities that is ?1.7 billion is reserved for SMEs.
