Abstract

The year 2002 was the last year of the 5th Framework Programme of the European Commission, and characterised by a transition phase towards the current 6th Framework Programme. Main topics of the Neutron Physics Unit's work programme addressed issues of nuclear waste transmutation and safety aspects of nuclear energy production, and these will remain the main topics of their research also in the following years. However, the need for maintaining the nuclear competence in Europe results in a widening of the research activities towards more basic physics problems, in order to enhance their contacts to universities and other research laboratories in support of a European Research Area. In the 6th Framework Programme the efforts to open the facilities to outside users for neutron research at Geel will be considerably increased.
