In the framework of the EU enlargement, the EC-JRC-IRMM set up a project to improve the scientific basis for metrology in chemistry in EU Candidate Countries. Metrology is a science of measurement and obviously, measurements of different kinds are carried out in Analytical Chemistry. Chemical measurements are essential in different fields (biology, environment, geology, medicine etc). Important decisions are often based on these (e.g. whether food can be eaten, goods can be sold, patient should be treated), in support of legislation (related to health care, trade), production processes and societal problems. Several activities were initiated (training, fellowships, sponsoring seminars, conferences and participation to IMEP). A particular initiative was the one to assist each country to write a Status Report on Metrology in Chemistry.

The report intends
-?to be the end product of a process to document today status. Internationally, this process involved not only the providers of services in metrology in chemistry but all the major stakeholders in this activity (e.g. major field laboratories, accreditation bodies, regulatory bodies, educators, professional bodies). The Report does also not intend to describe all aspects in detail, but only main activities;
- to be the first step of the future improvement process, to lead to better cooperation and particularly a better understanding of what the future role and activities of each of these stakeholders should be.

In this report main aspects of the present state in Metrology in Chemistry (MiC) in Romania are described. The information given in the report was collected by co-operating and discussing the topic with Romanian experts from various fields (e.g. metrology, accreditation, research, industry, education, environment, food and health sector) and from the authors personal knowledge and experience.
