Abstract

The current work aims to present more complete results of hydrodynamic investigations of Sacca di Goro coasltal lagoon using COHERENS numerical model. COHERENS is a fully 3-D hydronamic finite-difference multi-purpose model for coastal and shelf seas which can be coupled to biological, resuspension and contaminant transport models and resolves mesoscale to seasonal scale processes. Being into the first stage of a detailed Sacca di Goro's study now it is focussed mainly on the physical aspects of the simulations as an important background for future nutrients transport and bio-chemical process research. In this work the previous hydrodynamic analyses are extended using a comprehensive 3-D model as well as assessing the impact of the bathymetry changes on all physical parameters. The present numerical model was calibrated and verified against short (two-day) observations for water surface elevation and currents during a high tide events and also using one year (1992) series of salinity and temperature records for central, eastern and western parts of Sacca di Goro.
After the model; calibration the surface elevation and current patterns formed under typical meteorological (wind) and tide (low and high amplitude) conditions for Sacca di Goro were studied. Next the important from practical point of view hydrodynamic parameters as travelling (propagation) times, water particles trajectories and residence times connected with water exchange and transport processes into lagoon have been considered. Finally the differences after cutting a new channel through the sandbank, separating the lagoon from open sea, in terms of salinity and temperature fields are discussed in details.
Also in the work there are given a short description of COHERENS, input data for Sacca di Goro case study during 1992 (tide, open sea, rivers, channels and meteorological input) and a discussion of the obtained numerical results for currents, water surface elevation travelling and residence times, s
