The enterprises are in the centre of the strategies, which has been launched by the Lisbon European Council in March 2000. The objective is to become the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy of the world, which is able to develop a lasting economic growth, to create more and higher qualified jobs, as well as a much stronger social cohesion. The reaching of the aim is up to a point finally depending on the success of the enterprises and more specifically of the small and medium-sized enterprises.
The Observatory of the European SME sector has been introduced by the Commission in 1992 with the ambition to improve the prosecution of the economic performance of SMEs in Europe. Its task is to deliver the information on the SMEs on national and European level.
