The project objective is to improve the efficiency and reliability of ladle stirring for the steel industry. In addition, the service life of the stirring element should be adapted to that of the ladle. Therefore the gas flow in the purging system, the resulting steel convection in the ladle and the corrosion of the plug and well block are the main problems to be solved.
The wear of a split plug was investigated with different ladle slags. At a mass content of FeO over 8% a deep infiltration of the binding matrix is observed. This is due to the low melting point and viscosity of those slags. At low basicities the phases CA (6) and MA spinel are formed, which have a high melting point and may hinder further infiltration.
