Abstract

In general, rurality is assigned to NUTS3/2 regions while some of these regions have clear urban and rural parts.

The overall objective is to contribute to the development of a geographic database of rural areas in Europe which will contribute to better understanding and enhanced spatial analysis of the territorial heterogeneity of Europe. Such a database can constitute a sound information base for the formulation or revision of policies aiming at fostering development in rural areas. The specivic objectives of this particular study are to:
-develop and test a method to measure the heterogeneity of the rural character within NUTS3-regions (NUTS2 for BE, NL, LU and DE),
- propose an appropriate spatial subdivision of heterogeneous NUTS3/2-regions.
