Abstract

The 1st European Summer School on Soil Survey was organized by the Institute for Environment and Sustainability of the Joint Research Centre of the EC in summer 2003.

The objective of the summer school was to provide specific training required for the development of the European Soil Information System (EUSIS) and information linked to the implementation of the new EU Thematic Strategy for Soil Protection.

The Summer school included four days of instructions in classroom and one day of field discussions. The major topics of the training:
1. Soil survey - From landscape and profile description to digital cartography and pedometrics.
2. The World Reference Base for Soils Resources (WRB) - the official correlation system of the International Union of Soil Science between national soil classification system and the adopted scheme for harmonized soil maps and databases in Europe.
3. Functions of soils and the threats to soils - as identified in the Communication on the Thematic Strategy for Soil Protection.
4. Field excursion � Discussions on landscape- and soil classification (terminology harmonization), and special environmental and soil problems.

There were 26 participants on the course, coming mainly from Candidate Countries (11) � now New Member States, drawn from national soil surveys, universities and regulatory authorities.

The Summer School proved to be very successful and it will take place again in 2004 at JRC Ispra.
