Abstract

Secure and sustainable energy sources are required to maintain our standard of living and preserve a peaceful environment for the future generations. Energy production from fossil fuels will decline in a short time and other sources have to be found in this moving world where the needs of big nations as China or India are increasing rapidly. For the long term, fusion will provide an option for a large-scale energy source that has a low impact on the environment and with vast and widely distributed fuel resources. Fusion is the process, which powers the sun and other stars. In the stars the required conditions for the reaction, essentially confinement and temperature, are provided by gravity with created by huge quantities of materials. On earth the easier reaction between deuterium and tritium gas is reached under plasma conditions at temperature of about 100 millions of degrees. The gas confined by high magnetic fields. These conditions are confined by high magnetic fields. These conditions are obtained in toroidal facilities called tokamak where the confinement is obtained by the superposition of a toroidal field and the field produced by the current in the plasma. Performances of 16 MW of fusion energy have been obtained in the European torus JET a large facility located at Culham in England dear Oxford. In Caderache at TORE SUPRA about 40% of all the research budget is dedicated to Fusion in Europe. Nearly all the magnetic fusion research activities in the European Union are hightly coordinated at the European level.
