Abstract

The 2nd European Summer School on Soil Survey was organized by the Institute for Environment and Sustainability, Joint Research Centre, Ispra (VA), Italy, 12-16 July 2004.

The objective of the summer school was to provide specific training required for the future development of the European Soil Information System (EUSIS) and information linked to the implementation of the forthcoming EU Thematic Strategy for Soil Protection.

The Summer school included four days of instruction in the classroom and a one-day of field excursion.

The major topics of the training:
- Soil survey - from landscape and profile description to digital cartography and pedometrics.

- The World Reference Base for Soil Resources, WRB (FAO, 1998) - The correlation scheme for harmonized soil mapping and databases.

- Functions of soils and threats to soils (as identified in the official Communication on the EU Thematic Strategy for Soil Protection).

- Field excursions - to examine soils on the JRC site at Ispra (0.5 day) and soillandscapes of the Emilia-Romagna western plain (1 day); particular attention was paid to soil classification (terminology, harmonization etc.), and specific environmental/soil problems.

There were 20 participants on the course, coming mainly from EU New Member States and Candidate Countries, drawn from national soil surveys, research institutes, universities and government authorities.

The Summer School proved to be very successful and it is planned to hold the school again in 2005, at a location outside the JRC probably in one of the New Member States.
