Automatic surface inspection of rails at the exit of the hot-rolling stand could generate process and quality gains of up to EUR 2.7 million/year for the whole European rail industry. This research project has combined efforts from IRSID, Sogerail, British Steel, and Thyssen Schienen Technik in a laboratory study on cold rail samples and an online experimentation , associated with image processing studies. The research ended up with a proposed configuration, which should allow good defect detection, based on capturing images taking advantages of the light emitted by the hot rail.
