Abstract

The aim of this project is to develop a new and more sensitive techniques in order to understand and quantify the effect of (i) addition or residual elements in steels, and (ii) additional reactive gases in the annealing atmosphere (N(2)-H(2) with traces of water) on surface characteristics.
The project combines (i) in-situ surface characterizations to define the location, the nature and the in-depth distribution of oxide precipitates and (ii) development of more realistic models taking into account oxygen adsorption, the possible formation of mixed oxides, and the effect of the temperature increase during the first step of the treatment.
The programme of work is a multi-partner collaboration between IRSID Metz (France). CRM Liege (Belgium), RWTH Aachen (Germany), and is co-ordinated by IRSID.
