Abstract

The fact that embrittlement of phosphorus � copper �clean� steels, such are those used for the last generation of VVER RPV�s, is enhanced by nickel is very well known since several years. Results from surveillance programmes, those obtained in TACIS projects, research data and results of model alloys programmes confirm such conclusions up to end of life (EOL) VVER-1000 fluences.
Only recently, the role of manganese in embrittling high Ni steels and welds has been identified clearly. It is observed that embrittlement of Ni steel/welds increases dramatically if Mn content is above a certain threshold.
