Abstract

The present report deals with the seismic retrofit of bridge piers with rectangular hollow cross-sections using fibre-reinforced polymers (FRP). It follows a series of three reports on the assessment of existing reinforced concrete bridges by means of quasi-static cyclic and pseudo-dynamic testing. A literature review of the experimental assessment of as-build bridge piers with hollow cross-section is presented first with the aim to identify the main seismic deficiencies that will be the objectives of retrofit. In the following, the most common retrofit techniques for bridge piers are presented with particular attention on piers with hollow cross-section.
