By November 2003, the draft intercalibration register was successfully established following the procedure described following the Intercalibration guidance document agreed by the Water Directors in December 2002. In order to evaluate the quality of the draft register, JRC-EEWAI carried out an in-depth analysis based on metadata submitted electronically to the JRC from 25 countries by January 2004. At that time, the Draft Intercalibration Register contained 1075 sites of all three surface categories. Rivers were represented by the biggest number of sites (653) followed by the lakes (314), coastal waters (83) and transitional waters (25).
