Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

Social sciences and the humanities are playing a key role in the development of a European Research Area. They do so by enhancing the understanding of economic, institutional, cultural and social processes and by informing policy and wider public debate on the acceptability, feasibility and effectiveness of strategies and measures to tackle complex issues such as employment, migration or conflict resolution.
The Dialogue Workshops have been a forum for both knowledge development (through exchange of information from different disciplines as well as from practical knowledge), and of knowledge diffusion across projects and beyond the research community. They have also proved to be highly effective fora for promoting communication and understanding between the research and policy making communities in Europe. The proceedings offer a 'taste' of the types of topics and styles of discussion that took place. We hope they will provide 'food for thought'. We aim at learning from this first phase of 'dialogues' to improve and expand this and other forms of exchange between research in social sciences and humanities and the cultural, economic, social and institutional world that they study and that, at the same time, shapes them.
