The EUs 4th RTD Framework Programme (1994-1998) provided a major impetus for European level Socio-economic research, by introducing for the first time socio-economic research as one of its research activities.
The scope of this research is both deepened and widened through the implementation of the Key Action Improving the Socio-economic Knowledge base in the 5th Framework Programme (1998- 2002).
The objective of this key action is to improve our understanding of the structural changes taking place in the European society in order to identify ways of managing change and to involve European citizens more actively in shaping their own futures. This involves the analysis of the main trends giving rise to these changes, the analysis of the relationships between technology, employment and society, the reappraisal of participation mechanisms for collective action at all levels of governance and the elaboration of new development strategies fostering growth employment and economic and social cohesion.
The key action is being implemented through the calls for proposals in a progressive manner depending on the quality and maturity of the research proposals received after each call.
