Proposals for ITER IC reference design upgrades
In this paper a number of upgrades to the ITER Ion Cyclotron System Reference Design 1) is proposed with the intent of simplifying the design and significantly improving its performances. The general array scheme and all interfaces with the vacuum vessel are unchanged. The number of array element is increased from 8 to 12. Significant changes are proposed for the (in vessel) Vacuum Transmission Line (VTL), leading to a simplification of the matching system and to a greater flexibility in the choice of the tuning components. An important improvement to the VTL layout leads to the possibility of on site replacement of all tuning system components without the need of breaking the torus vacuum, a often underlined disadvantage of the so called �internal tuning system�. A detailed performance estimate based on high frequency finite element analysis of the overall system is included in the paper.
