The aim of the project was to evaluate the novel use of portable expert systems for improved fault detection, diagnosis and maintenance of rolling mills. This report presents the full results of the project where they are available. Thus, completed systems are described for three main activity areas.
A technique using integrated pattern recognition and ruled based systems for fault finding in large DC electric motors has been completed.
In the area of fault diagnosis in electromechanical systems, an approach has been enhanced to allow remote access of the system, making fault diagnosis completely portable.
In the maintenance area, a method has been developed to aid technicians servicing a specific piece of equipment. This has provided expertise that can be deployed to similar systems in other plant areas.
The final activity area of the project related to hydraulic systems is reported on for only a period of 36 months and not for the whole project. The report for this area is based on reports from earlier stages of the project and the results of the longer term monitoring have not been made available.
