EP2010, The future of electronic publishing towards 2010, A strategic study on the future of research into publishing, content and knowledge technologies

Funded under: FP6-IST

Abstract

In October 2002, the former Information Society DGs Unit D1, Electronic Publishing, commissioned a strategic study entitled The Future of Electronic Publishing towards 2010 (EP2010). The focus of this study was to draw up a road map for relevant technology research and development for the interactive electronic publishing industry. Since then however, triggered by internal restructuring of the Electronic Publishing and Knowledge Management units, to form Knowledge Management and Content Creation (KMCC), the EP2010 study has shifted its focus towards the research issues surrounding Knowledge and Content Technologies for a prospective Knowledge-based Economy in 2010. The shift occurred by consensus of all stakeholders including those representing interactive electronic publishing, which is also reflected in the subtitle of the study, The Future of Research into Publishing, Content and Knowledge Technologies for the Knowledge-Based Economy.
Despite the changed focus, the original objectives have proven a good choice that still sits comfortably with the ground covered in the work.
