Workshop on research and technological challenges in the field of border control in the EU-25, proceedings

A workshop on �Research and Technological challenges in the field of Border Control in the EU-25� was held during 18 - 20 October in Ljubljana, Republic of Slovenia. It was designed as a discussion forum in the context of the Preparatory Action on the Enhancement of the European Industrial Potential in the field of Security Research (ESPR). The workshop was organised by the European Commission Directorate-General Research (RTD), co-ordinated with Directorate-General Enterprise (ENTR), Information Society (INFSO), Justice and Home Affairs (JAI), Joint Research Centre (JRC), External Relations (RELEX), Taxation and Custom Union (TAXUD), Energy and Transport (TREN).
More than 80 experts, from 22 Member States, participated in the event. The first morning was dedicated to a series of presentations from the host country and from the Commission services. All presentations demonstrated that the topic of border management is of high importance in the context of the EU Security Strategy. A number of key threats to the EU were identified, among them:
- Terrorism
- Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction
- Regional conflicts
- State failure
- Organised crime
