European workshop on the applications of nanotechnology in environment and health

Funded under: FP6-NMP

Abstract

The European Commission presented, on 11 June 2003, a Communication to the Council, the European Parliament and the European Economic and Social Committee on A European Environment and Health Strategy. On 12 May 2004, the Commission issued a further Communication entitled Towards a European Strategy for Nanotechnology.
Health and Environment related research represents approximately 40% of the total 6th Framework Programme budget, while over a further 10% of the budget is allocated to nanotechnology, a field of growing importance that can be expected to have a significant impact in health and environmental applications.
It was against this background that the European Workshop on the Applications of Nanotechnology in Environment and Health was held at the JRC Ispra from 17-19 May 2004. A group of approximately 20 leading European experts in relevant scientific disciplines were invited to contribute to the workshop to discuss the potential applications of nanotechnological research in the area of Environment and Health. There were over 60 participants, of whom approximately half were drawn from the Commissions Services (DG JRC, DG SANCO, DG RTD, DG INFSO) and the remainder from European research institutions, university and industry.
