The ideal MHD model of peeling-ballooning modes for the onset of the ELM is reviewed with some of the previous results that lead to the present understanding of the MHD stability of the edge transport barrier. Extensions to the ideal MHD theory are discussed followed by recent developments in the observations, theory and simulations of the non-linear phase of the ELM and the peeling and ballooning modes.
