Abstract

Reason for the research on controlled fusion through magnetic confinement:
The aim is to produce energy through controlled thermonuclear fusion and to be thus capable of meeting the increasing energy requirements of the planet in the future. The jet tokamak (a circular and toroidal magnetic confinement device) has been studied throughout the world for around 50 years. The construction project for the ITER device means that there is about to be a breakthrough in the industrial development of fusion reactors with this jet. In order to better prepare for the arrival of ITER, important research has been conducted in France with the Tore Supra tokamak (tokamak actively cooled throughout), and in England with the JET tokamak (tokamak that holds the record for fusion power).
Aim of the plasma/wall integration service:
In a fusion reactor one of the main issues is to discover "how to protect the components in the toroid from the plasma and how to protect the plasma from impurities emitted by the walls that surround it".
This issue raises a problem, namely the interactions between the plasma and the wall and more specifically the extraction of particles and heat.
This is the role of the plasma/wall integration service where my placement is based. The researchers and engineers employed in this service are involved with development, exploitation, experimentation and modelling in all the areas that are concerned with controlling the heat flux and particles on the edge of the plasma and with controlling impurities. The aim of all of this is to achieve improved control and a better understanding of the reactor during a plasma discharge and to enable an accurate physical interpretation of the measurements made.
