Five years of Descartes Prize winners, Excellence in scientific collaborative research, Excellence in science communication

Funded under: FP6-SOCIETY

The Descartes Prizes are among Europes foremost scientific awards. Entering their sixth year, the prizes have come to be regarded as the European Union's very own Nobel Prize. Each year, a million euros is granted to research teams for demonstrating scientific excellence through close transnational co-operation. For the first time, in 2004, due recognition was also given to the field of science communication with five awards totalling a quarter of a million euros - shared among scientists, filmmakers and specialist communicators. Unlike the Nobel Prize, this prestigious European award celebrates team efforts not individual researchers per se. Their work is judged on the criteria of excellence and cross-border co-operation, and the necessary balance between the two.
