This brochure is a collection of the abstracts that were presented at the �Nutrition and ageing workshop�, organised in Brussels on 29-30 November 2004. Most of the abstracts are related to projects funded in the fifth RTD framework programme, primarily key action 1 �Food, nutrition and health� and key action 6 �The ageing population and their disabilities�. The interest to this topic is twofold. On the one hand we know that the proportion of elderly people in Europe is currently around 20% and this is predicted to increase to 25% by 2020. On the other hand we are aware that lengthening life expectancy is largely the result of improvements in hygiene, advancement in medical science and nutrition. Many of the health problems and physiological changes experienced by old people, attributable to the ageing process, are now recognised to be linked to lifestyle or environmental factors, even in early life. Some projects have already finished and their results are discussed in this brochure. Others are still running and, for those, objectives and/or hypotheses are presented.
