Abstract

The main target of this project is to verity to what extent by-products or residues of iron and steel industries can be used as efficient sealing materials for the capping of typical in-house landfills (e.g. slag heaps, mineral mono-landfills) of this branch of the industry. Field tests on a pilot plant scale have been carried out to monitor the most interesting water balance parameters of nine variations of single-layer sealing systems based on alternative mineral sealing materials in concurrent comparison to three variations of commercialised sealing systems. The differentiated representation of the monitoring period of 15 months shows clearly, however, that, compared with the sealing materials available on the market, the alternative sealings in line with a silica gel amended EAF-slag, a clay-liner with a 50 % substitution of natural clay by blast-furnace sludge, and in particular the sealing from complete substitution through a mixture of ladle slag - blast furnace sludge 1 : 1 show comparable, and in relation to the standard GCL -Benonite Mat reference, significantly better sealing efficiency.
