A coordinated multipartner, multinational research project, involving Corus UK Limited, BFI, ISQ and CSM, was carried out on the electric arc furnace steelmaking process to investigate:
(i) operational factors that influence the formation of polycyllic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurants (PCDD/Fs) in EAFsteelmaking;
(ii) conditions that promote and/or prevent the formation of PCBs and PCDD/Fs in the EAF via the de novo synthesis mechanism;
(iii) the formation of organic micropollutanys in a pre-heating shaft;
(iv)measures for preventing the emission of organic micropollutants from shaft preheaters by use of internal post-combustion;
(v) the optimum design for pre-heating systems on EAFs to meet environmental and economic demands;
(vi) the reversible adsorption of organic micropollutants on technical plastics as a cost-effective means of removing such substances from EAF waste gases.
