A wide range of steel grades which are used in the field of heavy plates (structural steel acc. to DIN EN 10025, high strength steel acc. to DIN EN 10137, wear resistant steel and pipe steel) are investigated by means of non-destructive test methods to evaluate quality characteristics such as surface hardness, yield strength, tensile strength, etc. A special effort is made to create an test device with the potential to test heavy plates up to 100 mm thickness. The combination of the data acquisition and evalution of a 3MA device with a US system has also shown great potential in the field of textured material. Several calibration strategies of the nd device are investigated and a software tool is built up which allows a simple calibration procedure without any detailed knowledge of the testing techniques involved. An analysis of the type and amount of main disturbances influencing the non-destructive measurements is carried out. Such perturbations are plate temperature, lift-off effects, causes of bad planeity or scale, residual stresses, decarburisation, magnetism of the plates, etc. The measurement uncertainties are estimated for the mechanical tests and the nd measurement, respectively. The validation of the prototype system, the implementation of the nd test device in the mill, and the verification and reliability tests of the nd technology in plant condition are carried out successfully.
