Abstract

The development of the 3D integrated biogeochemical model for the Sacca di Goro lagoon has been divided in several steps:
a/ A continuous biogeochemical model was first developed (Zaldívar et al., 2003a). The objective was to develop, test and validate, as a function of experimental data available, an ecological and geochemical model in the water column and in sediments which took into account the main compartments in Sacca di Goro, i.e. nutrient, phytoplankton, zooplankton, bacteria, detritus dynamics, and to study their stability and dynamic characteristics without taking into account spatial effects. The model had to include all relevant aspects characteristics of Sacca di Goro.
b/ One important aspect of this lagoon is clams farming and as the main end-user requests were related to this aspect, then, a discrete-stage based model was developed, implemented and coupled with the previous model (Zaldívar et al.,2003b).
c/ As several end-users questions and scenarios required the study of spatial variability in the lagoon a 3D hydrodynamic model using COHERENS (Luyten et al., 1999) was implemented and validated (Marinov et al., 2004, Marinov et al. 2005). The model simulated the temperature and salinity fields in the lagoon.
d/ Finally, a fully 3D integrated model taking into account biogeochemical cycles as well as clam farming in Sacca di Goro has been implemented. Since the previous steps have been already reported, this work is focused on this last part.
