Environmental monitoring for the dumps of Rio Riazzone, Rio Vigne and Poiatica di Reggio Emilia through the use of lands and moss

Abstract

The considerable quantity and heterogeneity of materials that are put in to landfills and the transformation that happens are not always easily controllable. During the daily phases were the waste is put in landfill and also after the waste cover, the landfill introduces in the environment liquid, solid and gas. The quality/ quantity control of different wastes produced from landfill becomes indispensable for correct management of landfills that has the purpose of safe guarding the environment. Bioindicators to assess the mass of the potential heavy metal flows and their origin, that could interest the the body of the landfill and the neighbouring areas during the different workphases. Bioindicators (transplanted mosses) and superficial soils were used in this monitoring. Three landfills were monitored in the hills of Reggio Emilia (Italy).
