SCIENCE with SOCIETY, Summary of the EURAGRI conference Brussels, How to adapt and use the knowledge base for an optimal functioning of the food-health-agriculture system in the European Union

Funded under: FP6-SOCIETY

Abstract

This conference is part of a series of events organised jointly by the European Commission and EURAGRI with the aim of addressing the changing paradigms of agricultural research in Europe.
The first conference, “Agricultural Research in the European Research Area”, took place in Versailles in December 2000.
The second conference was held in Brussels in October 2002 under the title “Science for Society - Science with Society.
The third conference, “New Vision on European Food and Agricultural Research” was organised in Athens in May 2003.
The present report looks into the agricultural knowledge base in Europe, how it needs to adapt and how it can contribute to new challenges. Agricultural science being a “systems” science by nature, in order to act it must broaden its scope and become an efficient problem-solving tool. It also needs to keep strong links with the different subject disciplines in order to take advantage of methodological developments in cutting-edge science. The newly re-launched Standing Committee on Agricultural Research (SCAR) is a new opportunity to channel discussions on the European agricultural knowledge base into new research priorities, adding a distinct European view to the present research structure and avoiding the risk of uncoordinated cuts in resources which do not take the European perspective into account.
