Neutron Physics Unit, Scientific Report 2003
During the year 2003 we had the pleasure of hosting again several experimental groups using our facilities. In total 28 scientists used GELINA and the Van de Graaff accelerator for their measurements at Geel. In addition, five scientific visitors worked in the Neutron Physics unit during 2003. Ten fellows (four from Acceding and Candidate Countries) used our facilities for their experimental work, two with a non-EU fellowship. The good contacts to the colleagues in Candidate Countries were intensified in the NUSES workshop organised by JRC and INRNE_ in Sofia 19-22 February 2003. On 5-8 November 2003 our unit organised together with the Budapest Neutron Centre and the University of Debrecen the NEMEA_ workshop on Nuclear Measurements and Validations for Applications at Budapest, attended by 38 participants. The very fruitful knowledge exchange and positive response from the participants encourages us to continue this series also after the Enlargement of the EU in 2004. The improvement efforts ongoing at our two facilities resulted in a smooth operation of the machines and a delivery of beam time amounting to 3100 h at the Van de Graaff and 2450 h at GELINA (c.f. the chapter on Accelerators). The procurement procedures and signature of the contract for refurbishment of the modulators for sections 2 and 3 of GELINA were finalised and the installation work is foreseen for the summer break 2004.
