Abstract

A major step forward was achived during 2004 in the modernisation of the GELINA facility. Large parts of the klyston modulators feeding sections 2 and 3 of the accelerator were replaced by modern equipment, including cabinets, cabling and the interlock system. This required a major work in the modulator hall and the machine was not operational during four months. Since the restart in December 2004 the operation became significantly more reliable, stable and reproducible. This encourages us to continue with the modernisation and preparatory work is presently ongoing for modernising also the first section of the accelerator. It is wrth mentioning that most of the work is being done in-house including also the modernisation of the control system, with a minimum of interruption in the operation.
in parallel to the modernisation of GELINA we also got the approval for modernising the Van de Graaff facility by the replacing the present radio-frequency (RF) ion source by an Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) source. A technical study has been carried out in 2004 and preparatory work for implementation is ongoing. A beam line for time-of-flight measurements has been installed and a beam line including an electrostatic beam chopper, as described in this report.
