Abstract

The �Design rules for cold-formed structural hollow sections� project aimed to verify and extend the applicability of existing deign rules for cold-formed hollow sections. Common arguments against the safe use of cold-formed hollow sections are that their mechanical properties are inhomogeneous around the perimeter, due to difference in strain hardening during cold forming. The actual characteristics of mechanical and toughness properties of cold-formed structural hollow sections (CFSHS) on the European market were determined with coupon tests and with Charpy V-notch tests. The applicability of present cross-section classification limits in Eurocode 3 for plastic design was studied. An advanced design method based on available inelastic rotation was proposed for global plastic design. The available rotation was verified using calculation models, FE simulations and analysis of the results. Behaviour of CFSHS in welded connections was studied with K-joint and X-joint tests at normal and low temperatures, while strength and deformation capacity of welded joints was taken into account. Deign guidelines in Eurocode 3 for rectangular hollow-section joints are extended for members having b/t ratios larger than 35. New design provisions were developed and verified experimentally. The effects of strain ageing on toughness and fatigue properties, due to welding on the cold-formed corner area, were studied using Charpy V-notch impact and fatigue tests.
