The project aims at the development of a flexible steel modelling electronic workbench, as an open software environment where product and process models developed by ECSC, in-house, etc. can be linked and run to allow the modular development of integrated models of the various stages of the steel manufacturing process. The use and customisation of this open steel workbench will allow each steel manufacturer and R&D to continue their own modelling strategy and developments whilst providing a flexible �standardised� platform for collaborative work, but without necessitating the release of proprietary and confidential information. An ECSC prototype version of the workbench for demonstrating the feasibility of linking models for selected core steel processing areas has been produced within this research work. Also the partners have exchanged models for the demonstration of the potentialities of the platform. The SMW appears to be a very powerful platform for collaborative work. The main advantage of the developed platform is an easy link of modules, once they are included in the Workbench. Each module can be easily replaced by another one, including other models for the same domain: typically one module linking structure and properties by another one with the same function, but an other type of model. The visual concept (plug and play) of the Workbench, with different levels of grouping the modules makes the interaction between the models very clear. The fast link of the modules is very appreciable. The dataflow structure underlying makes the compound models logical and coherent. As a general comment, the developed interface results to be a powerful tool in building up complex model architectures, although its use is not immediate for the model developer and requires some skill in managing the modules and to produce a model component to be linked in the graphical interface.
