Extension of online automatic surface inspection system (ASIS) to packaging and organic-coated steel lines
This project proposes validated technical specifications for automatic surface inspection systems (ASIS) in order to expand their domain of application to two types of finishing lines, coil-coating and packaging lines, for which traditional visual inspection still remains the dominant inspection means. Starting from presently available systems, innovative technical solutions are studied, through experimentation at the lab and online, to overcome the identified limitations, due to surface aspect, presence of low-contrasted defects, need for global quality assessment, of present systems when applied to these finishing lines. These solutions include: a lateral lighting channel to enhance the visibility and thereby the detection of low-contrasted scratch-like defects oriented down-web; methods and implementation ways to processing high-occurrence tiny defects in a global way, through density calculation throughout the coil length instead of dealing with each one as an individual event; a method for detecting large background perturbations extending to the whole strip width as sometimes encountered on coil-coating lines (non-painted areas); a method for automatic adaptation to wide ranges of surface reflectivity over a factor of 10 or even more; the concept of post-processing operating on a coil-to-coil basis and making it possible to further process the data delivered by the inspection system in taking advantage of inspection data extending over the entire coil length. Performance assessment is given of the proposed solutions, integrated on the present ASIS platforms, on the two types of lines under consideration; the results clearly demonstrate the industrial viability of the imagined solutions under industrial conditions.
