Buying green! A handbook on environmental public procurement

Funded under: FP6-SUSTDEV

The European Commission has published a handbook on green public procurement. It explains in clear, non-technical terms how public purchasers, such as schools, hospitals and national and local administrations, can opt for environmentally sound goods, services and works.
Giving examples and providing advice for all steps of a procurement procedure, the handbook provides clear and practical guidance to local, regional and other contracting authorities in the process of buying green products.
Public authorities are the major consumers in Europe, with a yearly expenditure of around €1500 billion - some 16% of EU GDP. A decision to turn to green purchases can increase demand for green goods, encourage green production and help environment-friendly technologies conquer the market. This way, public institutions throughout the EU would be contributing to reach sustainable development in the European Community.
