The new SME definition - User guide and model declaration

Funded under: FP6-SME

This guide is aimed at entrepreneurs who want to apply for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) grants or loans, as well as at the officials who administer these various support schemes. Presenting and explaining the changes in the definition, the guide offers a step-by-step approach on how to qualify as an SME.
It is essential to have a common definition of SME in order to improve their competition and effectiveness. The definition has been elaborated after broad consultations with the stakeholders involved.
In the European Union, SMEs employ 75 million people and make up 99% of all enterprises. Supporting SMEs is a priority for the EU to ensure economic growth, job creation and economic and social cohesion.
