EU Research for Sustainable Earth Observation - Watching the World for a better Tomorrow

Funded under: FP6-SUSTDEV

Abstract

The ad hoc Group on Earth Observations (GEO), with strong political backing from governments and support from organisations around the world, is working towards an unprecedented level of coordination and harmonisation of Earth Observation Systems. Its goal is to create the Global Earth Observation System of Systems, or GEOSS, which will bring together all available information on the state of the world’s environment, consolidating existing data from disparate and disconnected sources. The GEOSS will facilitate the provision of relevant and meaningful environment information, responding directly to specific socio-economic needs, helping policy-makers and the scientific community, and providing useful information to businesses and citizens alike. Work is already under way to make the GEOSS a reality, including a variety of innovative EU-supported research and development initiatives.
