Abstract

Two reference materials (IRMM-540R and IRMM-541) have been certified. The CRMs consist of discs of specially prepared oxide glasses, containing respectively 15 and 50 mg/kg uranium (nominal values). The glasses were prepared from blended oxide powders with a limited amount of impurity elements of the kind that interfere with thermal neutron irradiation based methods. Glass rods were produced, which were then cut into discs of 2 mm thickness and 15 mm diameter and subsequently polished. The glass discs can be used for uranium determinations for example in geological samples using the fission-track dating method. The isotopic abundance ratio 235U/238U was measured and confirmed to be natural within the measurement uncertainty. The materials IRMM 540R and IRMM-541 are available as individual discs.
