Abstract

High-strength steel grade plates and FE calculation are keywords in the manufacture of highly efficient decks for application in ships, in particular, and bridges for heavy traffic, generally. Two shapes of deck (conventional and sandwich) were designed, manufactured, and tested under fatigue loads. These decks were manufactured with S355/S1100MPa steel plates, of 2/16 mm thickness. FE calculations 2D-3D were developed in order to have a parametric tool. Results indicated better performances for sandwich panel in terms of weight (-11 %), stiffness (+25 %) and fatigue limit (-30 %).
Fatigue behaviour results were greater than the requirements for the design of orthotropic steel decks according to EC3 code. Advantages in the use of steel plates with highstrength grades can assure good protection against accidental overloads, which can produce local or spread plastic deformation when overload is more than the elasticity limit of the steel used.
